High Performance Climate Informatics

The session will address challenges, issues and opportunities at the intersection of HPC, Big Data and AI in the climate change domain. It will introduce climate informatics as a means to provide more actionable climate information for decision makers and policy makers as well as its relevance today for Science and society. Additionally, world-class HPC infrastructures will be presented with a specific focus on Frontier (ranked 1st in the Top500) running at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) jointly with a set of cutting-edge scientific applications in the climate change domain.
The session will also discuss key initiatives in the climate informatics field at extreme-scale like Destination Earth and the Italian Center on SuperComputing (ICSC), where the convergence between HPC, Big data and AI represents a foundational element to address very high-resolution climate change scenarios.

About the speaker

Valentine Anantharaj

Dr. Valentine Anantharaj a Computational Climate Scientist at the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) hosting and operating Frontier, the world’s largest exascale supercomputer available for open science research. Recently, he had also served in a technical leadership role, as a Joint Group Lead for the DOE Energy Exascale Earth System Modeling (E3SM) project.

Dr. Anantharaj enjoys the challenges of solving “last mile problems” currently planning and executing the end-to-end distributed scientific workflow solutions at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF). He is also developing machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in climate and atmospheric sciences. He has diverse professional experience in the broad areas of computational sciences & engineering, machine learning, scientific data management, applications & decision support frameworks for weather & climate sciences. His current focus is on advancing the leadership scale climate and earth system simulation activities.
